This month we look at how technology is changing the way candidates are recruited. Every year, more and more recruiting and job hunting is done via the Internet. It is now much easier to find both active and passive candidates, and at a lower cost. Using resources available on the Internet, recruiters are able to spend their time most effectively – talking to the right candidates. This month's feature article is written by HCI's Allan Schweyer, author of Talent Management Systems: Best Practices in Technology Solutions for Recruitment, Retention and Workforce Planning. In it, you will learn more about how you can use the Internet to your advantage to find the best people. As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions.

Can We Finally Retire the Resume?
By Allan Schweyer
The Human Capital Institute
Paperless recruiting will become the norm, where every aspect of recruiting is online. Resumes have become the dominant currency of recruiting, when they should have become the equivalent of the U.S. penny. Most resumes are nothing more than a document of light fiction that contains a few keywords and some contact information. Many of them are full of fluff or outright lies. Top performers are the best candidates, but the chances of a top performer having a well-developed, up-to-date, nicely formatted resume customized for your firm, are pretty slim. It's time for recruiters to recognize the many shortcomings of resumes and embrace the emerging technologies that can help identify top performers and assess their capabilities without the need for a resume. ~ Dr. John Sullivan, San Francisco State University.
Indeed, there is no longer any reason for employers to rely on resumes, and yet the vast majority still do. Resumes are unstructured, difficult to search & compare, expensive to handle and frustrating to store and retrieve. In light of new and pending changes to the definition of an applicant from the OFCCP and EEOC respectively, resumes might even expose organizations to greater liability and higher compliance costs, in that they are more difficult to handle, classify and retrieve for audit purposes.
